Abstract

1,178,552. Electro-photographic development. FUJI SHASHIN FILM K. K. Feb. 16, 1967 [Feb. 21, 1966], No. 7543/67. Heading G2H. A photo-conductive layer having an electrically conductive backing is developed during or immediately after imagewise exposure by electrolysis in an aqueous solution of a compound containing at least one CH 2 = C(X) (Y) group (in which X and Y are different radicals) which is polymerized by free radicals produced by the electrolysis whereby the polymer formed is deposited imagewise on the layer. The polymerizable compound may be acrylonitrile, acrylamide, acrolein, acrylic acid, polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate or glycerol diacrylate. The electrolyte may also contain a polar solvent (e.g. acetone or methanol), a salt (e.g. Na Cl) to increase conductivity, a thermal polymerisation inhibitor (e.g. hydroquinone or its monomethyl ether), a free radical source (e.g. Fe Cl 3 or a cerium salt) and/or a compound (e.g. triphenyl tetrazolium chloride) which yields a formazone dye on electrolytic reduction. The electrolysis may be effected in an electrolytic bath, using a brush, sponge, gelatine film or porous paper. A plate which is wetted imagewise by aqueous and oleophilic inks is obtained by forming an image of hydrophilic resin on a layer of zinc oxide in a hydrophobic resin binder.
