Abstract
1,178,239. Automatic control of speed. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. Dec. 18, 1967 [Dec. 30, 1966], No.58372/66. Heading G3R. In an electric motor control system, e.g. in a rolling mill, in which compensation is made for load current, the speed of response to a suddenly applied load is improved by making the system responsive to a measurement of the load torque or force when its rate of change is high, and to a measurement of the armature current when the rate of change of that is low. This is done by passing the load signal (from a shaft torque measurer or load cell on the rolls) through an RC high pass filter F1<SP>1</SP> and the current signal through a low pass filter F2<SP>1</SP>, the filters being complementary. To obtain a particular response characteristic the output from one filter, or from both combined, may be passed through a further RC network Cvt, Rvt1, Rvt2, the values of which are related to the armature inductance and resistance, and the required response time. The combined compensating signals are applied to a thyristor bridge motor control circuit, whose other inputs are a speed reference SP, a D. C. tachometer feedback Rus1, a damping signal via a capacitor Cus, and a linearizing feedback from the output of the thyristor bridge. In a modification of the compensating circuit Fig. 3 (not shown) the load signal is applied through a multiplier the factor of which is varied by a motor driven potentiometer responsive to the difference between the output of the multiplier and the armature current signal, both applied through low pass filters. This causes the two signals to be automatically matched in magnitude during low rates of change, but for high rates of change the load signal is passed on unchanged.
