Abstract

1,178,166. Supporting electric conductors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 2 March, 1967 [1 April, 1966], No. 10007/67. Heading H2C. A method of assembling electrical apparatus in which a plurality of electrically conductive members 19, 21, 22 are supported in spacedapart and electrically-insulated relationship, comprises the steps of providing an element 23 of a glassy or crystalline polymeric material having the capacity when deformed to stable new dimensions to return to the predeformation dimensions upon being heated above a threshold temperature, irradiating at least a portion of the length of the element 23 in order to impart form stability thereto, stretching at least the irradiated portion to reduce the girth thereof and introducing the stretched portion through aligned openings 19a, 21a, 22a in the plurality of electrically conductive members 19, 21, 22. The stretched portion is then heated above the threshold temperature to cause those portions of the stretched portion located between the electrically conductive members 19, 21, 22 to expand to a diameter greater than the diameters of the openings 19a, 21a, 22a, in the electrically conductive members 19, 21, 22 so as to hold the members 19, 21, 22 apart. The polymeric element of, for example, polyethylene may be heated to below the threshold temperature while it is being stretched. A support bolt 24 passes through the element.
