1,177,879. Polymerisation catalysts. SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO. Ltd. 29 Aug., 1968 [4 Sept., 1967], No. 41359/68. Heading BIE. [Also in Division C3] A novel catalyst system for use in polymerising vinyl monomers comprises a peroxy compound, thiourea or a nitrogen-substitution compound thereof, and a compound of a metal whose valency is readily changed by the oxidative or reductive effect of the other catalyst components. The peroxy compound may be cumene hydroperoxide, p-menthane hydroperoxide, t-butyl hydroperoxide, an ester of such hydroperoxides (i.e. a peroxy-ester), hydrogen peroxide, potassium persulphate or ammonium persulphate. The thiourea derivatives include ethylene thiourea, N-alkyl-thiourea, N,N<SP>1</SP>- dialkylthiourea, N,N<SP>1</SP>-diphenylthiourea, N,N<SP>1</SP>- ditolylthiourea, N,N<SP>1</SP>ditoluylthiourea and N, N<SP>1</SP>-dibenzylthiourea. The metal compound may be a compound of Fe, Cu, N, V or Co, e.g. cupric sulphate, copper naphthenate, Cu(NH 4 ) 2 . SO 4 , vanadium acetylacetonate, cobalt naphthenate and ferrous sulphate.
