[Also in Division G2] Diazonium salts of formula in which R 1 is an alkoxy group with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, R 2 is hydrogen, chlorine, methyl, ethyl or alkoxy with 1 to 5 carbon atoms, R 3 is hydrogen or methyl and X is anion are prepared by reacting the appropriate 2-alkoxy benzyl. amine with the butyrolactone to produce the corresponding 1 - pyrrolidono - benzene. This compound is nitrated with nitric acid in the 4-position and then reduced to the amine with Raney nickel. The amine is diazotized with acidic sodium nitrate to produce the diazonium salt. The benzylamine may be nitrated before reaction with the butyrolactone.
