Abstract
1,177,464. Linear induction motor vehicles; tracked hovercraft. TRACKED HOVERCRAFT Ltd. 28 Aug., 1968, No. 41066/68. Headings B7K and B7L. A tracked hovercraft comprises two linear motors in tandem, each motor having a stator assembly 9 connected by a linkage allowing limited lateral movement of the assembly with respect to the vehicle, eachstator assembly 9 comprising two (or one) laminated parts 11 which are electrically energized, rigidly interconnected, and disposed on opposite sides of a rail 10, wherein each stator part 11 comprises at each end a coaxial wheel pair 13 mounted by a pin 21 on a lever 18 pivoted at 19 to a channel 14 to which the part 11 is fixed, the arm 22 of the lever 18 engaging a synthetic rubber block 23 and a compression spring 24 which act to maintain the stator part 11 at a predetermined minimum distance from the rail 10, and the wheel pair 13 in contact with the rail 10, such that when the stator part 11 is closer to the rail than said distance, resistance to movement towards the rail is greater than when the stator part 11 is further from the rail than said distance. A single stator part 11 may be employed, or a double stator assembly wherein one stator part 11 is electrically energized and rigidly connected to a block of magnetic material forming the other stator part 11. The stator assembly 9 is supported by wheels 15. The vehicle 1 is supported and laterally guided by respective hoverpads 5 and 6, each fed by an individual fan 7 disposed in its own intake duct.
