Abstract
1,177,142. Measuring photo-electrically. EXATEST MESSTECHNIK G.m.b.H. April 17, 1967 [April 22, 1966], No.17550/67. Heading G1A. The diameter of a running wire or the width of a running strip is measured by the duration of pulses arising in a photo-electric detector moved repetitively across the wire or strip 3 in a direction at right angles to the line of the wire or strip and responsive to radiation emanations if the wire or strip is hot or to the obstruction of light if the strip is cold, the detector light path including either a pair of concentric diaphragms having small aperture relative to the dimension being measured, or a single apertured diaphragm and a lens. A number of viewers 2 including the diaphragms are mounted in and along the cylindrical wall of a bell shaped element 1 rotated by a motor 4 to effect sequential scanning, and are coupled to the detector by light conductors 5. An arrangement having viewers at diametrically opposite positions on the bell may be used to compensate for vibration of the running element and a trigger device electromagnetically producing a pulse at each rotation of the bell may be used in conjunction with a gate circuit to compensate for continuous lateral displacement.
