Heading C2C. #-Acylamino caproic acids of general formula R-O-NH-(CH 2 ) 5 -COOH in which R is an aromatic group are prepared from caprolactam, #-aminocaproic acid and oligomeric and/or polymeric by-products and waste products, from the manufacture of polyamides with a caprolactam base, by decomposition of the starting materials in an aqueous alkali medium at a temperature between 100‹ and 350‹ C. for a time less than 500 minutes, the reaction product being acylated in a weakly alkaline medium. Preferably R is phenyl or p-nitrophenyl.
