Abstract

1,175,874. Heterocyclic thioketones. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 27 June, 1968 [21 July, 1967], No. 33729/67. Addition to 1,049,637. Heading C2C. 5 - Mercapto - 1,2 - dithiole - 3 - thiones and their salts are prepared by heating a corresponding 1,2 - dithiole - 3 - thione having the formula wherein R is hydrogen, or an aliphatic or aromatic group, in alkaline alcoholic medium containing sulphide or polysulphide ions, and optionally acidifying the resulting salt to obtain the free mercaptan. When R is an aliphatic group, this may be a straight or branched chain alkyl or a cycloalkyl or aralkyl group; when aromatic, R may be aryl, alkaryl, alkoxyphenyl or chlorophenyl. The sulphide or polysulphide ions are introduced as alkali or alkaline earth metal-, ammonium- or diethylammonium-salts or are formed in situ from sulphur, H 2 S or a thiation product of the dithiolethione starting material, and alkali metal hydroxide. The reaction medium may contain up to 50% by volume of water.
