Abstract

1,175,857. Change-speed gears; clutch combinations. AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT. 3 July, 1967 [14 Sept., 1966], No. 30531/67. Headings F2C and F2D. [Also in Division B7] A variable speed gear for a motor vehicle having a transversely mounted engine comprises a hydrodynamic torque converter B in series with a forward-reverse gear C and a continuously variable friction gear E. An engine crank-shaft A is fast with the impeller 1 of the torque converter B and the turbine 2 drives through gears 5, 6, 7 the input shaft 8 of the reverse gear C. Friction segments (3), Fig. 2 (not shown), carried by the turbine 2 move radially out under centrifugal force to engage the impeller 1 and lock up the torque converter at a predetermined speed. The shaft 8 is fast with a drum 10 of a double clutch unit 13, 14. A valve 15 supplies pressure liquid to selectively engage the clutches 13, 14 which connect freely rotatable gears 11, 12 to the input shaft 8 for forward and reverse ratios. The gears 11, 12 respectively drive through an idler (17) and directly gears 16, 18 on an intermediate shaft D which is geared at 19, 20 to an input shaft 22 of the continuously variable friction gear E. The gear E has interpenetrating friction discs 23, 24 splined to the shaft 22 and to a drum 28 fast with a pinion G of a differential gear. The discs are urged into frictional engagement by springs 25. The shaft 22 is carried by a bracket 31 pivotable about the shaft D to move the shaft 22 laterally and thus vary the eccentricity of the discs 23 for ratio shift. A nut 33 carried by the bracket 31 engages a screw 32 driven by an electric motor to pivot the bracket for ratio shift. The discs 23, 24 may be sprayed with a wear-resistant metal (e.g. molybdenum) which provides a roughness and breaks up the oil film between the discs.
