Abstract

1,175,589. Stranding machines. M. MARTINEZ. 12 July, 1968 [3 Aug., 1967], No. 35677/67. Heading D1T. A stranding machine, Fig. 1, having a plurality of spaced apart spools 11 to 15 mounted for rotation in cradles 16 floating in spaced apart bearing structures 17, has the wires from the spools arranged to follow a sinusoidal path evenly disposed about the longitudinal axis of the machine, the wires between the bearing structure 17 being supported by rotatable curved support members 25. The support members 25 may comprise groups of wires 25a, Fig. 4, supported by spaced apart clamp members 31, each clamp member 31 comprising an outer portion 31a provided with recesses for locating the wires 25a and an inner portion 31b having recesses 31c forming guides for the wires from the spools 10 to 15. The clamp members 31 prevent the wires from the spools 10-15 from falling down when the machine is stationary. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the groups of wires 25a pass continuously in an unbroken manner throughout the length of the machine. In Fig. 8 (not shown) there is shown two alternative embodiments in each of which the wires 25a (61) are in individual lengths within the support members 25. In Fig. 13 (not shown) the support member 25 is also wound about the axis of the machine and is in the form of a curved sheet or strip of metal. This strip may have eyes on its inner or outer surface to support the wires to be stranded, Fig. 9 (not shown). Stop motion responsive to wire breakage Each wire spool is supported on pintles 84, Fig. 12. Mounted on each pintle 84 through a ball and helical groove connection 87 is a flywheel 88. Under normal running conditions the flywheels 88 are adjacent the spool but if the wire from the spool breaks a friction drag on the spool causes the spool to slow down and this permits the kinetic energy of the flywheels 88 to rotate them away from the spool, this movement of the flywheels away from the spool causing a flange 99 on the flywheels to move away from between an air-flow path between two opposed orifices 100, 102 the resultant increase of pressure in duct 102 being used as a signal to operate brake means to stop the machine. Stop motion for excessive rocking of cradles Each cradle carries a pivotally mounted weight (108) Fig. 10 (not shown) that under normal conditions is suspended between opposed orifices (109, 111). If the cradle rocks excessively, due say to a faulty bearing, the weight (108) swings to settings permitting air to flow between said orifices, the resulting rise in pressure in one of the orifices being used as a signal to operate means stopping the machine. Each spool is acted on by a belt brake to tension the wire being pulled therefrom.
