Abstract

1,175,267. Artificial kidneys. BAXTER LABORATORIES, Inc. 16 Dec., 1966 [16 Dec., 1965; 14 June, 1966; 29 Sept., 1966], No. 56499/66. Heading A5R. [Also in Division Bl] A dialysis apparatus for use in an artificial kidney comprises a thin tubular dialysis membrane and a supporting band for the membrane, the band comprising a first set of parallel strands arranged on one side of and disposed at an angle to a second set of parallel strands. Four tubes 2a-2d of semipermeable membranous material are coiled together in the same plane about a hollow core 12. The tubes are separated by supporting bands 4a- 4d of fibreglass, plastics or metal which are coiled with the tubes about the core. The coils are enclosed within a casing 13 which has outlet members 10 with conical bores through which the outlet ends of the tubes pass. The outlet members are evenly spaced about the circumference of the casing. Similarly shaped and spaced inlet members 10 for the inlet ends 3 of the tubes are provided in the core. The tubes are connected in parallel between main inlet and outlet conduits connected to the patient. The bands 4a-4d each comprise two parallel edge-defining filaments around which strands (6 Figure 5) are wound at angles of 60‹ and 120‹ to the filaments to form a flat mesh structure. In use the strands (6) of the bands compress the tubes, which are of flat tubular form, to form interconnected pouches (7) and define flow channels for wash solution outside the membrane. The conical bores of the inlet and outlet members 10 secure elastic terminal tubes 9 in frictional sealing engagement with the inlet and outlet ends of the tubes.
