A washing-machine is operated in such a way that time period of forward rotation of the drum, the time period when the drum is stationary, and the time period of reverse rotation of the drum are all equal, the sequence being repeated several times during the washing operation with a similar time pause between each sequence. The period in each case is preferably fifteen seconds.
