Abstract

1,174,783. Surface halogenated nylon fibres. MONSANTO CO. 16 Dec., [6 Jan., 1966], No. 56374/66. Heading B5B. A halogen modified nylon fibre on which halogen having an atomic number between 17 and 53 is attached to polyamide molecules essentially on the skin or surface of the fibre in a proportion with the range of from 50 to 5000 parts by weight per million parts of fibre may be produced by passing the fibre through an atmosphere containing halogen in the absence of an initiator in such a manner that the concentration of halogen in the atmosphere and the period of residence of the fibre in the reaction zone does not allow diffusion of the halogen into the core of the fibre. The halogen is thereby bonded to the surface a skin of the fibre predominantly in the form of a halogenamide group adduct which may be described as a change transfer complex. Exposure of the product formed to ultraviolet or other energy source results in rearrangement of the halogen atoms such a portion of the co-ordinate bonded halogen atoms substitute on the surface molecules in the form of a covalently bonded halogen. The preformed nylon fibre may be simultaneously subjected to the action of halogen and an initiator for halogenation, such as ultraviolet light. The period of residence of the fibre in the halogen atmosphere may be less than 2 seconds and the halogen may be diluted by an inert gas such as nitrogen. The light source may be other than ultraviolet to effect photochemical halogenation. Bulbs emitting light of wave length in the range of 3300 to 4800 angstroms may be used.
