Apparatus for playing a game comprises a set of solution cards each bearing a problem and its solution which are placed on a surface, preferably at random and face downwards to define a route along which a playing piece belonging to each player is moved, means e.g. a die, for determining the distance along the route which each playing piece should be moved and two further sets of cards, each set comprising one of a pair of mutually complementary cards which taken together present one of the problems, the arrangement being such that a player obtains a point or trick when a problem posed by his possession of a pair of complementary cards is solved when his playing piece moves on to the appropriate solution card. The problem may be translation of a word into a specified language or a mathematical problem involving addition, substraction, multiplication or division, the cards of one of the sets being dealt to the players and the cards of the complementary set being placed face downwards so that the uppermost card may be taken when the dice is thrown and the playing piece moved along the route of solution cards. The apparatus may also comprise a set of blank cards to replace the solution card removed and counted as a trick if it is the correct card to solve the problem posed by the player's pair of cards.
