Abstract

1,174,371. Welding by pressure. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 8 March, 1968, No. 11566/68. Heading B3R. [Also in Division H1] In making a tubular electrode of wire mesh for an electron tube a tubular mesh is formed by winding a wire comprising a refractory core coated with a metal of lower melting point about a mandrel, the wire having a coefficient of expansion lower than that of the mandrel and heating the assembly to a temperature at which sufficient pressure is produced by differential expansion of the mandrel and wire to cause the wire to wire contacts to weld, the temperature being below that at which the metal coating on the wire melts. A wire 18, of tungsten clad with nickel for a cathode or of molybdenum clad with gold for a grid, is helically wound about the enlarged portion 30 of a high alumina ceramic mandrel 20 and is wound over end rings 12, 14 of molybdenum plated with nickel for a cathode and with gold for a grid, arranged on the portion 30, to form a tubular mesh 16. When the mesh is formed the mandrel is removed from the wire-winding machine and a clamp formed by three part cylindrical sections 24 of ceramic and molybdenum tieing wire 25 is secured about the mandrel. The assembly is heated in a wet hydrogen atmosphere furnace to 1030‹ C. for 20 minutes when due to increased expansion of the mandrel and the clamping action of the sections 24 and wire 25 the wire to wire and wire to ring contacts weld. If the electrode is to form a cathode it is provided after removal from the mandrel with electron emissive material, e.g. barium oxide, strontium oxide or calcium oxide. The ring 12 may be replaced by an annular washer in a plane at right angles to the axis of the mesh and an annular clamp may be screwed to the mandrel to overlap the washer. A wire-mesh screen formed by the wire 18 may partially close one end of the electrode.
