Abstract

1,174,031. X-ray contrast medium. LABORATOIRES LABAZ. 12 Feb., 1968 [17 Feb., 1967; 7 Nov., 1967], No. 6883/68. Heading A5B. A peroral contrast medium (for use, when admixed with water, in radiological examination of the digestive tract) comprises colloidal barium sulphate in admixture with a non- toxic surface active agent, a polyol and a peptization agent. The surface active agent may be a sodium alkyl sulphate, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphate or sodium tetradecyl sulphate; a sodium alkyl sulphoacetate, e.g. sodium lauryl sulphoacetate; a sodium alkyl sulphosuccinate, e.g. sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate; or an ester formed from a polyalcohol and a fatty acid such as the polyoxyalkylenic etheresters of sorbitan, e.g. polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan mono-oleate. The polyol may be a pentitol (e.g. arabitol or xylitol) or a hexitol (e.g. mannitol or sorbitol); and the peptization agent may be an alkali metal phosphate (e.g. disodium orthophosphate) or a non-toxic hydrosoluble salt of an aliphatic organic hydroxylated polyacid (e.g. the sodium salt of citric, tartaric, malic or ascorbic acid). The preferred medium comprises colloidal barium sulphate, sodium lauryl sulphoacetate, sorbitol and sodium citrate. The medium may also comprise a solubilizing agent (e.g. glycerine, a polyethylene glycol or propylene glycol); a preservative, e.g. sorbic acid; a thickening agent, e.g. sodium alginate; a dispersing agent, e.g. colloidal silica; a sweetening agent and/or an aromatic substance capable of rendering administration more agreeable. The medium may be in the form of a powder or an aqueous suspension.
