Abstract

1,173,834. Making bladed rotors; welding by fusion; brazing. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. 17 Nov., 1967 [29 Nov., 1966], No. 42876/67. Divided out of 1,170,592. Headings B3A and B3R. [Also in Divisions B5 and F1] Blades are bonded to the rotor of a fluidflow machine, e.g. a gas-turbine engine, by means comprising fibrous material. The fibrous material may be synthetic resin reinforced with carboniferous or boron fibres or alternatively the fibres may be coated with a metal, e.g. beryllium, cobalt, nickel, hafnium, niobium, osmium, palladium, platinum, rhenium, rhodium, tantalum or vanadium, or a nickelchromium alloy. In a compressor application for a gas-turbine engine, fibre-reinforced synthetic resin blades 10 are secured to a rotor 11 by fibre-reinforced synthetic resin tapes 16 passing over the blade roots 12. The tapes 16 are bonded to both the side walls 13, 14 of the rotor and to the roots 12 when the complete assembly is cured in a mould so that, in operation, at least some of the centrifugal loads to which the blades 10 are subjected are transmitted to the rotor 11 by the tapes 16 in shear. The blades 10 may also be bonded to the rotor 11 and are hollow to receive cooling air from the rotor interior. Instead of using tapes 16, the roots 12 may be bound to the rotor by fibres which are subsequently embedded in synthetic resin material. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the tapes or fibres (23) do not pass over the blade roots (21) but are bonded to flat or curved axially facing end surfaces (22) of the roots. The tapes (23) are bonded to each other where they overlap. The rotor 11 may be reinforced by circumferentially extending fibres. When metal coated fibres are used the coating may be applied by electrolytic plating, spraying or vacuum deposition, and the bonding effected by plating, brazing, electron beam-welding or spraying.
