Abstract

1,173,770. Treating tobacco. LORILLARD CORP. 23 Dec., 1966 [10 Aug., 1966], No. 57652/66. Heading A2C. A smoking tobacco product consists essentially of tobacco and a pharmacologically acceptable salt of an oxadiazole of the formula: wherein X is hydrogen, halogen or a lower alkyl group having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R is an amino radical of the formula, (CH 2 ) nNR 1 R 2 wherein n is O or an integer of from 1 to 4 and Ri and R 2 are the same or different and are each either alkyl or alkylol having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the amount of the oxadiazole being sufficient to antagonise at least partially the ciliastic effect of tobacco smoke. Preferred acids for forming the salts with the oxidiazoles are citric, acetic, tartaric and gluconic acids. But mineral acids such as sulphuric, hydro- Chloric, hydrobromic or methanesulphonic acids may be used. The oxidiazole salt may be applied to the tobacco in either aqueous or organic solvent solution, the preferred solvents being methanol, ethanol and propanol. Oxadiazoles exemplified are 3- phenyl-5-diethylaminomethyl-1, 2, 4-oxadiazole; 3-phenyl-5-dimethylaminoethyl 1, 2, 4-oxadiazole; and 3-phenyl-5-ethylmethylaminoethyl 1, 2, 4-oxadiazole.
