Abstract

1,173,676. Radiation absorbing materials. NUCLEAR POWER GROUP Ltd. 16 Aug., 1968 [1 Sept., 1967], No. 40093/67. Heading G6R. [Also in Division C1] Ca(OH) 2 which has been pressed into pellets and sintered by means of steam at above atmosphere pressure and at a temperature at or above 400‹ C., is enclosed in metal tubes and may be used as nuclear radiation shields of the type described in Specification 1,054,219. The Ca(OH) 2 of the present invention is less susceptible to shrinking at elevated temperatures, has a reduced hygroscopic action and a density which is increased by the above treatment from 75% up to 90% of the theoretical density.
