Abstract
1,173,661. Organo mercury compounds; biocidal compositions. TROY CHEMICAL CORP. 4 Jan., 1967, No. 585/67. Heading ASE. [Also in Division C2] An organo mercury addition compound of formula: where R is an aliphatic, aromatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon radical, R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>2</SP> are hydrogen atoms, alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl or hydroxyalkyl radicals containing 1-3 carbon atoms, X is OH or the anion of an organic or inorganic acid, and n represents the degree of mercuration of R is claimed per se. The compound may be made by blending R(HgX) n with a normally solid amine of formula: where R, R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>. X-n are as above. The invention also includes compositions of the above reactants in which the amine comprises 5-95% by weight based on the total weight of the composition. The compound and compositions are soluble in water, water soluble alcohols, glycols and glycerols and mixtures thereof, and the solutions may be used as biocides. They may also be sprayed or tumbled with water-soluble film forming polymers e.g. methyl cellulose, carboxymethyl cellulose, hydroxymethyl cellulose, starch and dextran derivatives, alginic acid, polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylamide to form coated particles. They may also be packaged in bags made of these watersoluble film-forming polymers or of polymers insoluble in water but soluble in dilute alkalis. Example 1 describes the preparation of the addition compound of phenyl mercury acetate with tris(hydroxymethyl) aminomethane.
