Abstract

1,173,338. Gas-cooled reactors. ATOMIC POWER CONSTRUCTIONS Ltd. 14 Feb., 1967], No. 7077/67. Heading G6C. The graphite core 2 of a reactor surrounded by an inverted cup-shaped radiation shield 3 is supported on a base 7 comprising a lattice structure of beams 8. A dome-shaped partition 4 around the shield 3 defines together with the concrete pressure vessel 1 a space accommodating heat exchangers 5. Plates 11 extending between the beams 8 carry blocks forming a radiation shield 12, spaces 13 being provided for the passage of the coolant gas. The lower ends of the beams 8 are sealed to one another by plates 14 forming a bottom wall to the partition 4, openings 16 in the beams permitting a plenum chamber 18 to be formed beneath the shield 12. Openings 16a in the outermost beams 8 are fitted with a gas throttling device for adjusting the rate of coolant flow therethrough. The base 7 is supported on columns 21 by roller assemblies 21a. In operation, coolant gas is circulated by circulators 6 through openings 20, part of this flow enters openings 16a and the remainder passes up in the space between shield 3 and partition 4. The gas entering openings 16a passes into plenum chamber 18, flows through spaces 13 into an upper plenum chamber 17 and then flows upwardly through the fuel element channels in the core 2. The gas passing through the space between the shield and partition flows downwardly through openings in the top wall 23 of the shield and flow passages in the core 2 into the plenum 17 where it merges with the other part of the coolant and flows upwards through the fuel element channels. The gas leaves the top ends of the channels through charge tubes 24 having gas outlets 25, the gas flowing downwardly over the heat exchangers 5 and returning to the circulators 6.
