Abstract

1,173,143. Protective clothing. SECRETARY OF STATE FOR DEFENCE. 28 Nov., 1966 [20 Sept., 1965], No. 53075/66. Divided out of 1,173,142. Heading B2E. [Also in Division A3] Protective clothing for protecting the wearer against the inward passage of externally applied offensive chemicals in particulate liquid form, or vapour thereof, while permitting egress of heat and perspiration from the wearer comprises an air-permeable cloth treated with an oleophobic compound to render its exposed outer surface liquid-repellent, and an inner lining of absorbent charcoal on the surface of the cloth towards the wearer. The clothing e.g. a complete garment or overgarment for protecting the whole person of the wearer, a part garment such as a glove, hood or mitten, or the glove portion of a glove-box or fume cupboard, may have an air-permeability of at least 100 linear feet per minute under a pressure of ¢ inch water gauge. The cloth may be woven, nonwoven, knitted, or a composite fabric of natural or synthetic fibres, or combinations thereof, at least in part a nonwoven cloth of synthetic fibres, or a non-woven layer of synthetic fibres bonded to a layer of highly permeable knitted or woven fabric. The non- woven fabric may consist of a major proportion of polyester or polyamide e.g. nylon, fibres and a - minor proportion of viscose fibres bonded with neoprene or chloroprene and may have a lightweight cotton scrim reinforcement bonded thereto. The outer surface may be both water- and oil-repellent, the oleophobic compound being a fluorocarbon compound. The clothing may be rendered resistant to burning by incorporation therein of a flame retardent. The clothing may be produced by the process of Specification 1173142.
