Abstract

117,274. Trottier, R. E. Dec. 22, 1916. Sieves with compound motion; separating by shaking-apparatus.-Relates to apparatus having reciprocating .sieves, or riffled or smooth tables for sorting or separating, either in the air or in liquid, ores, grain, &c., and comprises an arrangement for supporting and actuating the sieve, &c., whereby compound movements are imparted thereto, the path in the forward direction being different to that in the rearward direction and either above or below it, and the path in either direction being variable. The device is operated in one direction by a cam, and in the other by a spring by which it is sharply drawn against an inclined pivoted abutment whereby a shock or impulse in a more or less vertical direction is imparted to it. As shown in Fig. 16, an upper frame 1, adapted to carry the sieve, &c., is connected by links 5, 7 to a lower frame 2, which in turn is connected by links 6, 8 to fixed pivots 47, 52. A pair of springs 32 draws the frames 1 and 2 forward to bear against a pivoted abutment member 3, the upper frame 1 being supported by the hinge pins 48, 53 of a double pair of levers 9, 10, 11, 12 connected at one end to the fixed pivots 47, 52 and at the other end 49, 54 to a sliding carriage 42, running on rollers 40, 41' and drawn towards the front of the machine by a spring 31 bearing against a fixed abutment 38. The abutment member 3 is keyed to a shaft 43 provided with an arm 33 drawn forwards by a spring 59. The device is drawn rearwardly by means of a cam 22, a roller 23, on the end of a lever 28, a link 20, and a spring-mounted rod 19 on the frame 1. Buffer rollers 24 are provided to cushion the return motion of the roller 23. As the frame 1 moves forward, under the action of the springs 32, the forward end or nose thereof rides up the inclined surface of the abutment lever 3. At the same time, the nose of the lower frame 2 bears against the lower end of the member 3. The frame 1 is thus caused to rise as it moves forward. The path traced out by the frame 1 is determined by the relative tensions and strengths of the springs 32, 59, 18, and 31, which are all adjustable for this purpose, and also by adjusting the point of connexion of the link 20 to the lever 28. The closed paths traced out are moreover divided into two distinct classes, according to the action of the lower end of the abutment lever 3 on the nose of the lower frame 2. If the height of the shaft 43 is regulated so that the nose 4 of the frame 2 cannot slip under the lower end of the abutment lever 3, the return path of the frame 1 is above the forward path. On the other hand, the height of the shaft 43 may be regulated so that, as the frame 1 arrives at the end of its forward movement, the nose 4 of the lower frame 2 slips under the lower end of the abutment lever 3. This causes the frame 1 to descend more or less quickly, and the return path is beneath the forward path, the nose 4 of the frame 2 comprising a pivoted member as shown, retained in position by a spring 62. The sieve or table may be secured to the frame 1 by means of attachment brackets 13. An arrangement is shown in Figs. 17 and 18 for adjusting the inclination of the table, both laterally and longitudinally in relation to the frame 1. The table 64 being hinged at 69, its lateral inclination is adjusted by means of a hand-wheel 65, serving to rotate a shaft 66 having screw-threaded engagement with stays 67, 68 supporting the table, and which are thereby spread more or less apart. In order to provide for adjustment of the longitudinal inclination, the table, together with the screwed shaft 66, is carried by an intermediate frame 70 pivoted at 71, and is supported at the opposite end 75 by a similar pair of stays 76, likewise adapted to be spread more or less apart by operation of the hand-wheel 72 on the screw-threaded shaft 73.
