1,172,508. Code converters. RANK XEROX Ltd. 19 Dec., 1966 [27 Dec., 1965], No. 56663/66. Heading G4H. A digital code converter for converting code groups into larger code groups uses a circulating memory loadable through logic means with conversion information. A code converter comprises a recirculating magneto-strictive delay line containing 84 segments each of 117 bits, preceded by a group of sync. bits. An input bit group representing one of 117 characters is compared with a counter specifying the bit position reached in the current segment of the delay line. On equality, which occurs once (at the same time) in each segment, the current delay line bit is gated out to a C.R.T. display. The delay line is preloaded, e.g. over telephone lines, from a computer (which can thus alter the font), which also supplies the character bit group to be converted. These two types of input are distinguished by a bit preceding them. Use in cryptography is also mentioned.
