1,171,793. Aliphatic nitrile sulphites and carbonates and their conversion to isocyanates. SINCLAIR RESEARCH Inc. 21 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965 (8)], No. 47151/66. Heading C2C. Compounds of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is an aliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 50 carbon atoms, at least one of the cyclic groups being attached to an aliphatic carbon atom of R<SP>1</SP>, unsubstituted or substituted by groups which are devoid of isocyanate-reactive hydrogen atoms, X is S or C and m is 0, 1, 2 or 3, may be obtained by reacting the appropriate aliphatic mono- or poly-hydroxamic acid with thionyl chloride (to produce the sulphite) or phosgene (to produce the carbonate) at a temperature below the decomposition temperature of the product, generally at atmospheric pressure and preferably in an oxygencontaining organic solvent or in the presence of an excess of the thionyl chloride or phosgene reactant. Compounds of the above formula wherein X is S and provided that R<SP>1</SP> is cycloaliphatic when m is 0 are claimed to be novel. All the above products may be thermally decomposed to yield isocyanates, the decomposition suitably being effected by heating the compound to a temperature below the degradation temperature of the isocyanate product, preferably in the presence of an inert solvent, e.g. xylene, toluene, chlorobenzene, thionyl chloride or phosgene.
