Abstract
1,171,716. Optical recording. BELL & HOWELL CO. 17 July, 1967 [18 July, 1966], No. 32685/67. Heading G5R. In a variable-density optical recording device for recording two or more signals on a single track on a moving light-sensitive medium, each signal modulates the intensity of a light beam which is directed to strike said medium over an elongate area, each area having its longer dimension at an angle to the longer dimension of each other area and to the direction of motion of the medium. Sound signals picked up by microphones 24 are amplified 22 and applied to the variable intensity light-emitting transducers 14, 16 both of which record on the track W. The transducers may be solid state devices with their light-emitting junctions disposed with their long dimensions at 45 degrees to the direction of movement of the film 8 and perpendicular to each other. Alternatively the transducers may be conventional variable intensity light screens projecting light on to the film via narrow slots or slits disposed similarly to the light emitting junctions. The separate signals are played back by photo-cells receiving light via the film track and slots similarly disposed to the recording elongate areas. The signals may be further separated by recording on colour film using a different colour for each channel.
