Abstract
117,146. Stevenson, J. R. July 14, 1917. Tentering.-Relates to improvements in the combined drying-can and tentering machine described in Specifications 8553/12 and 1069/14, wherein fabric is carried around alternate drying- cylinders and grooved wheels by means of endless tentering-chains moving in slidable races. The slidable chain races mounted on each of the series of heated rotatable cylinders 4, Figs. 1 and 2, are positioned by devices fitted to movable structures also provided with chain races and adapted to be drawn together and apart by right and left hand screws. The movable structures are provided with brackets 22 having rollers 31, adapted to engage grooves in chain-race rings slidable on the ends of the cylinders, and with bearings 10 for grooved chain-wheels 6, which are arranged beneath and between the cylinders 4 and are connected by telescopic rods to support the fabric. The longitudinal parts of the structures are provided with return races for the chains. The axles of the wheels 6 are non-rotary and are carried in adjustable spring-controlled blocks in the bearings 10. Frames 37 at each side and end of the machine have chain races on their upper surfaces in line with the corresponding chain races of the movable structures and return races for guiding the chains beneath grooved wheels 40 before they pass around the cylinders 4. The races in each frame 37 are connected at their outer ends by a grooved wheel 39 mounted on a vertical axis, the links of the chains having pivots 53, Figs. 13 and 15, to allow them to bend round the wheels 39 and pivots 55 at right-angles to the pivots 53 to allow them to bend round the races on the cylinders 4 and wheels 6. The links are provided with curved surfaces 44 for engagement with the races on the cylinders and with curved surfaces 44<1> corresponding to the curvature of the races of the wheels 39. The clips are adapted to be opened by the engagement of a projection 48 with a flange on the wheel 39. The clips may be constructed as shown in Fig. 37; in this form, the movable jaw 46 is pivoted to levers 91 and to links 92, the jaw being closed automatically by a spring arranged in interfitting thimbles 101 disposed between the jaw and the pivot 94 of the levers 91. The movable jaw may be omitted and the fabric received directly on tenter-pins 103. The clip is formed with a hood 102 to retain heated air. The fabric is dried by means of air forced by a fan 58, Fig. 22, to an air-heater 59 supplying a main duct 60, Figs. 1 and 2, having adjustable branch ducts 62, 65, 68 furnished with nozzles 63 for acting on the selvedges of the fabric and with nozzles 66 supplying heated air through the ends of the grooved wheels 6.
