Abstract

A method of producing an encapsulated article comprises the steps of introducing powder into a mould from suitably disposed hoppers to provide, in turn, a first layer of encapsulating material occupying the full width and length of the mould, a layer of a different core material on top of the first layer and extending to the full mould width but of reduced length to leave spaces between the ends of the core layer and mould, filling these spaces with encapsulating material to the same thickness as the core layer, precompacting all the layers, and then adjusting the mould sidewalls to the desired width of the final strip and pouring further layers of encapsulating material to completely surround the core layer, compacting the complete powder mass prior to release from the mould, and sintering the composite compact to produce the article.
