A hopper barge comprising two halves 1, 2 pivoted on a fore-and-aft axis 5 approximately at deck level has an arm 6 rigid with one said half 1 and projecting over the other half 2 and an (hydraulic) power unit 8, 9 pivotally connected to the arm at a position 7 above the other half 2 and also pivotally connected (at 10) to the other half 2, whereby actuation of the power unit forces the two halves to open and close. To stop lowering, the operating member of switch 9 is moved back to its central position moving switch 24 to its off position and sliding contact 14 to the right to bridge contacts 12, 13 to energize solenoid 27 which moves valve 26 to the raising position opening contacts 29, 31 and closing contacts 32, 33 so that the system is ready to raise. To raise, the operating member of switch 9 is moved counterclockwise so that its plunger moves out of the left-hand depression on slider 14 into the right-hand depression and switch 24 closes to energize pump 25 to raise the vehicle body. To stop raising, the operating member of switch 9 is moved back to the central position moving switch 24 to the off position and sliding contact 14 to the left, back to the position shown completing a supply through contacts 11, 12 to solenoid 28 to return the system to the position shown.
