Abstract
1,170,854. Foamed siliceous materials. UNILEVER Ltd. (H. H. Weldes, and D. I. Netting). 4 May, 1967, No. 20690/67. Headings C3C and C3N. An incombustible, foamed siliceous material is made by forming an intimate mixture of 100 parts by weight of an aqueous silica sol containing 10 to 15% w./w. silica and having an initial pH within the range 0.8 to 2.0, 3 to 15 parts by weight of an inorganic compound capable of reacting with the silica sol to release carbon dioxide and 0.4 to 115 parts by weight of a filler. The inorganic compound may be an ammonium, alkali metal or alkaline earth metal carbonate or bicarbonate or an alkaline earth metal basic carbonate. The structure of the foamed material may be controlled by the addition of a silicone-polymer preferably silicone-glycol copolymer or a non-ionic surface-active agent to produce a buoyant foamed material with small uniform pores. An effective filler is fly ash and other suitable fillers include kaolinite clays, fine silica sand, plaster of Paris, perlite or vermiculite, and preferably includes 0.4 to 5 parts by weight of a fibrous product such as asbestos, glass or ceramic material to bind the above mentioned fillers together. A silica sol having a pH of 1.0 to 1.4 is preferably aged for a time depending on its concentration before the formation of the intimate mixture to control the polymerization of the silica and to permit better control of the final foam structure.
