Abstract
1,169,816. Extracting metals. INTERNATIONAL NICKEL CO. OF CANADA Ltd. March 10, 1967 [March 10, 1966], No.11441/67. Heading C7D. In a process for the reduction of granular "high-temperature nickel oxide" (i.e. nickel oxide, or oxidic nickel-and iron-containing material, made by roasting sulphide), the oxide in the form of granules of which at least 90% by weight pass through a 20 mesh sieve and at least 90% are retained on a 100 mesh sieve, is added to a moving bed of reduced nickel oxide granules and reduced in it by a reducing gas containing, by volume, 45-90% hydrogen, 0-45% carbon monoxide, optionally water vapour, carbon dioxide and methane, the balance being nitrogen, the temperature of the bed being maintained at 400‹-650‹C. by heat supplied by the reagents. The process may be effected in a fluidized bed reactor, or two or more of these in series, or in a rotary kiln. The reduction rate is increased by the addition of sulphur, e.g. in the form of elemental sulphur, hydrogen sulphide, hydrated nickel sulphide, sulphur dioxide or pyrites.
