Abstract
1,169,665. Soot blowers. DIAMOND POWER SPECIALTY CORP. 13 March, 1968 [13 April, 1967], No. 12248/68. Heading F2N. An auxiliary carriage 90 for a long retracting soot-blower having a frame 10, a lance tube 62 and a feed tube 64 telescopically disposed in communication with the lance tube, is adapted to be carried by the frame 10 for supporting one or both of the tubes during all the moved positions thereof and comprises an elongated framework 92, means, e.g. rollers such as 100 110, for mounting the auxiliary carriage 90 on the frame 10 for movement longitudinally thereof, rotary means, e.g. pulleys 130, mounted in longitudinally spaced relationship on the framework, flexible means, e.g. cable 134 trained around the flexible means having one flight thereof 136 adapted to be connected to the tubes frame 10 and the other flight adapted to be connected for movement with the lance for moving the auxiliary carriage longitudinally of the frame and supporting means, e.g. roller 118 and/or rollers 124, 128, on the framework adapted to be disposed in supporting relationship with respect to one or both tubes and movable with the auxiliary carriage to support the or both tubes at substantially the mid-point of its or their unsupported length, or lengths, in all moved positions thereof. The auxiliary carriage comprises longitudinally extending side members 92 of box-section which are connected, at the front and rear respectively by cross members 94, 96 the rear cross member 96 rotatably supporting a roller 118 shaped to support, intermediate its length, the rear end of the feed tube 64 which projects rearwardly of a principal carriage 14 for the tubes 62, 64, and the front cross-member 94 carrying a pair of rollers 124, 124 which are angled so that the peripheries of the rollers correspond to the helix angle generated by the periphery of the lance tube 64 during its concurrent longitudinal and rotational movement as it travels forward and backward. The upper flight 138 of the cable 134 is connected to a principal carriage 14 by a bracket 146, the lower flight 136 being connected to the frame 10 by another bracket. To maintain a power supply cable 150 for a drive motor 28 properly tensioned while the principal carriage 14 is moving the cable is connected between the brackets 142, 146 and passes over an idler pulley 152 carried by a side member 92 of the auxiliary frame 90. The mechanism for driving the principal carriage 14 comprises a reversable motor 28 which, by means of a gear train, Fig. 3, not shown, rotates a drive gear (54) which is secured to the end of a cross shaft (52) and which is disposed in constant mesh with a gear rack (18) on the soot-blower frame 10. The gear train also rotates a sleeve (58) which is rotatably mounted in bearings (60) and which is connected to the lance (62). The principal carriage 14 has guide rollers 20, 26 and rollers (20, 18) which co-operate with tracks (12, 18) along the side of the casing (10), switch L.S.F. reversing the direction of the principal carriage 14. The forward end of the lance tube 62 is supported by a front roller assembly 70 which is vertically adjustable.
