Abstract

[Also in Divisions E2, F2 and G6] A tool 32 for inserting a securing device 20 in a recess 23, 37 comprises a tubular portion 47 through a transverse slot 44 of which a pair of cams 45 extend. The cams are biased outwardly by a spring 48 and plunger 46 so that when the cams enter a space 41 defined by jaws 39 of the securing device, the cams open outwardly to prevent removal of the tool. The tool includes a ram 50 having a frusto-conical end 50A which expands the jaws thereby wedging the securing device in the recess in order to secure a rod 33. The plastic deformation of the jaws enables the tool to be withdrawn. To remove the securing device, the tool is used in conjunction with a different ram which compresses portions 40 of the jaws back to their original positions thereby allowing the cams 45 to abut the shoulder 41A of the recess 41 and the device to be withdrawn. In a modification, the cams are replaced by balls. The tools may be operated by an hydraulic jacking unit or a screw mechanism.
