Abstract

1,169,167. Artificial fibres. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 7 Sept., 1967 [17 Oct., 1966], No. 46359/66. Addition to 1,114,151. Heading B5B. [Also in Divisions D1 and D2] Fibres e.g. of length 0À1 to 2 inches and diameter 0À001 to 0À003 inch, are produced by separating e.g. cutting into pieces, a fibre assembly comprising a three-dimensional structure of a multiplicity of interconnecting thermoplastic fibre elements (the elements in such structure being aligned in the same direction, some-5 to 50%-having branched cross-sections i.e. with offshoot fibres, and the direction of the lines of separation being transverse to such direction of alignment) and disintegrating the pieces into discrete fibres. The disintegration may be effected in bulk while the pieces are suspended in an inert liquid e.g. water. A sheet material may be formed by filtering the aqueous suspension on to a fibre-collecting filter surface. The structure may have been produced by drawing extruded foamed thermoplastic material as described in the parent Specification and from a mixture of polymers or copolymers that are not completely mutually soluble and have been bulked by heating so that differential relaxation of orientation stresses in the elements cause them to buckle. The production of polyethylene and polystyrene fibrous materials is exemplified, but a wide variety of materials may be used including polyamides, polyurethanes, polyesters, polyolefins, polyacrylonitrile, acrylonitrile-vinyl ester copolymers, regenerated cellulose, cellulose derivatives, and natural and synthetic rubbers.
