Compounds of the general formula wherein Y represents an alkyl, alkenyl or alkadienyl group or an aryl or furyl group which may be substituted in the ring by alkyl, alkenyl, alkadienyl or alkoxy groups or halogen atoms, R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, each represent a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, alkenyl or alkadienyl group and R represents hydrogen or an alkyl group, may be obtained (a) by cyclizing an enolic compound of the formula where M represents an alkali metal atom and R represents an alkyl group and optionally hydrolysing the carbalkoxy group to a carboxylic acid group, or (b) by reacting a compound of the formula YH with a corresponding 5-chloromethyl compound and optionally hydrolysing the carbalkoxy group in the resulting product.
