Abstract

1,168,540. Rotary filter. BRITISH TITAN PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. 1 May, 1968 [1 June, 1967], No. 25336/67. Heading B1D. An inward flow, rotary drum filter comprises an outer surface consisting of a series of circumferentially spaced segments each presenting a concave outer surface, on to which the elastic filter medium is drawn over the filtering and cake-washing sectors of the drum A, B, the internal suction being released, and possibly compressed air being applied to the segment, at position C whereupon the filter cake is thrown from the medium, which springs away from the central area of the segment (Fig. 4, not shown). The medium may comprise rubber threads or may be woven polyamide or polyester or knitted fabric capable, of a 10% expansion under a pressure of 10 p.s.i. The segments comprise blocks of ebonite, nylon, polyethylene or polytetrafluoroethylene, with surface grooves and through passages communicating with pipes 10 leading to rotary valve (11) by which suction and pressure is applied. Each segment or set of axially abutting segment sections is located in a trough (2) of the drum surface. A layer of wire mesh may cover the segments under the filter medium. As the drum passes through bath 14 of slurry, the fine particles tend to clog the medium, but this results in increased pressure across the medium and the medium is thereby drawn tighter on to the segments, stretching and opening out the pores to counteract the clogging. The bath has an agitator 15. The drum may have 8 to 30 segments round its circumference.
