Abstract

1,168,431. Regenerating spent cracking catalysts. BRITISH PETROLEUM CO. Ltd. 22 May, 1967 [27 June, 1966], No. 28601/66. Heading B1E. A process for the regeneration of a bed of catalyst comprising a metal hydrogenating component and a zeolite having a sodium content of not more than 5% which has become deactivated during a hydrocatalytic process stage comprises the steps of purging hydrocarbons and hydrogen from the catalyst bed burning off deposits on the catalyst in a stream of inert gas and oxygen at or below 950‹F., purging residual oxygen from the catalyst with inert gas, and reintroducing hydrogen preparatory to the start of a further processing period, characterised in that the catalyst bed is cooled to a temperature below 350‹F after the oxidative burns off and before the reintroduction of hydrogen. The inert gas used to dilute oxygen is nitrogen. The zeolite may contain H<SP>+</SP> or Mg<SP>++</SP> without adverse effects. The hydrogenating component may be one or more components from Groups VIa or VIII e.g. Pt or Pd. Examples describe (1) NiO, CoO, MoO 3 or Br0 3 , Al 2 O 3 and SiO 2 ; (2) Pd or SiO 2 -Al 2 O 3 of surface area 676 m<SP>2</SP>/gm.
