Abstract

A heat-sealing device comprises a membrane 11 of low thermal capacity, means 13 to hold thermoplastic sheets or layers 12 to be sealed together stationary during the sealing process and to press the sheets or layers 12 against one side of the membrane 11, devices 21, 26 for heating and cooling, respectively, the layers 12 through the membrane 11, and means whereby the devices 21, 26 are successively applied to the membrane 11 to heat and cool the layers 12 before the pressing means 13 is released. As shown, the membrane 11 is supported between bars 10 and is preferably a glass fibre fabric or mat. The pressing means comprises a heat-resistant resilient pad 13, e.g. of silicon rubber, mounted on a bar 14 carried on pivoted brackets 15 and which is raised and lowered by a solenoid 16 through a lever 17 and a link 18. The lowering of the pad 13 is limited by a stop 19. The heating device comprises a plate 21 clamped between bars 22, 23 and continuously heated by an electrical heating element and is carried by brackets 24 secured to a spindle 25. The cooling device 26 comprises a water-cooled hollow plate 27 carried by brackets 28 secured to a spindle 29. The spindles 25, 29 are turnable in unison by a parallel motion linkage comprising arms 30a, 31 and a link 32. The arm 30a forms part of a lever 30 secured to the spindle 25 and having an arm 30b movable by a bell-crank lever 33 through a link 34. A roller 35 on the lever 33 engages a cam 36. In use, a flattened polyethylene tube 12 is fed intermittently and at the end of a feeding cycle the solenoid 16 is energized to clamp the tube against the bars 10. Simultaneously, the cam 36 brings the plate 21 into contact with the membrane 11 for a very short time and then a spring 37 turns the lever 33 to bring the device 26 into operation to cool the melted tube whilst it is completely unstressed. The pad 13 is lowered and a stripper bar 20 attached to the bar 14 detaches the tube 12 from the membrane 11. The device 26 remains in contact with the membrane until the end of the next feeding cycle. In a modification (not shown), the bars 22, 23 are omitted and the heating device comprises an asbestos plate having a flat strip of a nickel-chrome alloy wound around the edge thereof and heated by a low voltage supply.
