Outer layers 24 (Fig. 3) of a tag cover the bent-over ends of a wire 23 or the like which passes through and secures both inner layers 22 of the tag to an article 21. The tag is readily removed (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) from the article by pulling one end of the layer assembly towards the edge of the article, so that an end portion of the wire tears through an inner layer and is freed from it; continued pulling in the same direction pulls the wire through and away from the article. Indicia may be printed on either of the layers. The outer layer 32 may be formed from a single sheet (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown), bent over the edge of the article. Alternatively, flaps 42 on the ends (Fig. 8, not shown) or the sides (Fig. 9, not shown) of the inner layer may be folded over to form the outer layers. The inner layer 62 may be in two separate parts (Fig. 10, not shown), each overlapping the edge of the article. The inner and outer layers may be in two (Fig. 12, not shown), or four (Fig. 11, not shown) separate parts and wire may not pass through the inner layers. In the former case, two layer sheets may be folded to form both layers on each side of the article. In the latter case, the parts may be secured before the wire is folded down. The wire may be inserted with the aid of a needle or compressed air. The layers may be made of normal or " wet strength " paper or a plastic material and the outer layer may be made of metal foil, preferably aluminium. Pressure sensitive or heat sealable adhesive may be used to join the layers.
