Abstract

1,167,914. Sulphur road-marking compositions. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. 1 Feb., 1967 [23 March, 1966], No. 4879/67. Heading C5W. [Also in Divisions C1 and C3] Sulphur is plasticized by adding to it, preferably whilst it is in a molten condition, a dimercaptan of the formula HS-A-SH where A is an alkylene group containing from 2-20 C atoms or an alkylene group containing from 4 to 20 C atoms, which group is interrupted by oxygen atoms or sulphur atoms to produce alkylene moieties containing at least 2 carbon atoms, the dimercaptan being added to the sulphur in a weight ratio of from 1 : 99 to 1 : 3. Preferably a minor amount, based on the total composition, of an alkaline material, e.g. alkali metal and alkaline earth metal carbonates, and organic primary, secondary, and tertiary amine, is added to the mixture, e.g. an amount of 1À5% by weight. In the examples the mercaptans used are #,#<SP>1</SP>-dimercapto-diethylether, #,#<SP>1</SP>-dimercapto-diethyl thioether, di-(#-mercaptoethoxy) ethane, hexane-dimercaptan, decane-dimercaptan, ethylene glycol-bis-(thioglycolate) and ethylene glycol bis-(mercapto propionate). The resultant composition is utilized as a road-making material.
