Abstract
1, 167, 730. Frequency measurement. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd., and P. C. BUTSON. Dec. 19, 1960 [Sept. 18, 1959], No.31964/59. Heading G1U. Frequency is indicated by radial deflection of a spot on a cathode ray tube screen, the direction of deflection corresponding to the frequency. The signal whose frequency is to be indicated is made to set up a standing wave in a waveguide 1 by a short circuit 3. One component of the standing wave is amplitude - or phase-modulated at frequency f, e.g. by supplying an oscillatory signal to a rectifier 2 or to a variable phase shifter. Further waveguides, terminated by short circuits 10, 13 and crystal detectors 9, 12, are coupled to waveguide 1 at points 5, 6 separated by #/8, # being the wavelength of the mean frequency of which indication is required. Detectors 9, 12 supply oscillations, of frequency f and of phase depending on the frequency of the signal to be indicated, to phase sensitive detectors 18, 19 where they are compared with oscillations of frequency f from oscillator 4. The outputs of the phase sensitive detectors therefore depend on the frequency to be indicated and are supplied to the vertical and horizontal deflectors of the cathode ray tube. Each crystal detector may be replaced by two detectors with their couplings to waveguide 1 separated by #/4, their outputs being subtracted. The range of frequencies which will give a unique direction of deflection is greater as junctions 5, 6 are closer to 3.
