Abstract

1,167,341. Recording apparatus. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 29, 1966 [Jan. 6, 1966], No.639/66. Heading G1J. [Also in Divisions G4 and H3] In a recording system, for a mass spectrometer, calibration pulses are produced as a signal passes progressively through predetermined values by comparing the signal with a reference signal stepped to a future value of the input signal each time the input signal reaches a predetermined relationship with the reference signal, the comparator preferably utilizing a high gain differential amplifier with negative feedback. As shown, a swept voltage V M , proportional to the square of the swept flux in the mass spectrometer, is compared in an amplifier 63 with the amplified output of a constant resistance potentiometer 69, a level detecting amplifier 85 producing an output when the voltage V M and the reference voltage from the potentiometer reach a predetermined relationship. A pulse is produced at this time by blocks PS1 ... MS1 and fed to a cathode-ray tube or galvanometer recorder as a first calibration pulse indicative of particles of predetermined mass. Each pulse is also fed to a chain of bistable circuits BI1 ... BA1 which in turn selectively energize mercury wetted reed relays CA1 ... CI2 so as to change the setting of potentiometer 69 to a value corresponding to the next calibration point. Fine and coarse calibration markers may be provided by a transistor switching circuit feeding current to the galvanometer coil. The bi-stable chain is reset by closing switches RS and 73. Analogue calculating circuits for providing V M are described (See Division G4).
