Abstract

1,165,834. Seismic prospecting. MOBIL OIL CORP. 31 May, 1967, No. 25134/67. Heading H4D. [Also in Division G3] A seismic head is attached to a container which is towed behind a ship and maintained at a constant depth by automatically controlling the supply or withdrawal of gas to or from the container through a tube connected to the ship so as to eject or admit water as necessary to increase or decrease buoyancy of the container. In Fig. 1, gas within a container 10 towed at the end of a cable 13 by a ship 12 is supplied or withdrawn through a flexible tube 15, according to the position of electromagnetically operated valves within a unit 16 mounted on the ship, so that water is ejected or admitted through a hole 14 to cause the container to rise or sink. Container 10 is kept upright by a keel 44 and contains a resistor 18 which is varied by hydrostatic pressure and hence depth. Resistor 18 is connected through cable 13 to control the electromagnetic valves and thereby correct the depth. A seismic survey head 11 having neutral buoyancy is attached to the container by a cable 43 and signals from it pass through cables 42, 13 to recording gear on the ship. The container may be raised to the surface, for towing to the site, by operation of a switch to short circuit the depth setting resistor.
