Abstract
1,165,831. Preparation of organic isocyanates and carbamyl chlorides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 5 Jan., 1968 [26 Jan, 1967], No. 3961/67. Heading C2C. A process for the manufacture of organic isocyanates and carbamyl chlorides comprises reacting primary or secondary amines with phosgene in the vapour phase in a reactor provided with means for agitation of the vapours as they pass through the reactor, the process including a degassing stage when used for the manufacture of an isocyanate. Thus the reactor may be tubular and provided with a rapidly rotating shaft aligned centrally within, carrying blades, arms or sweeps which rotate about the central shaft. The amine vapour may be diluted with an inert gas e.g. nitrogen or with a vapourized inert solvent and the hot vapours emerging from the reactor, which is preferably at a temperature of from 160-300‹ C., are cooled by contact with a liquid cooling agent, preferably an inert organic solvent from which the isocyanate may subsequently be distilled. The preparation of p-tolyl isocyanate is described. A list of isocyanates prepared in this way is given.
