Abstract

1,165,738. Axial-flow fans. COOLING DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Oct.2, 1967 [Nov. 1, 1966; April 12, 1967], Nos.48860/66 and 16685/67. Heading F1C. A blade for an axial-flow fan comprises a hollow aerodynamic profiled part 5, Fig. 1, and a tube or rod 10 connected thereto to distribute the stresses during use, the part 5 being of low strength material, e.g. polyolefin or an acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, compared to the rod's material, e.g. metal or resin-impregnated fibre glass. The walls of the part 5 are extruded or moulded. The rod is secured to the interior of the part 5 by bolts or rivets 13 which extend through holes 15, 15a, 12, the holes 15 existing in an external clamping plate 14 lying in a recess 18. The blade is connectible to a hub 2 fixed or freely mounted to a shaft 1, by screwing the rod 10 into a U-shaped block 4 and thereafter clamping the rod at the required angular and radial position by tightening a bolt (not shown) passed through holes 3 and 7. Alternatively, the rod may be wedged into the hub. In an alternative embodiment, Fig.2 (not shown), the clamping plate and rivets are omitted, and the part (5) of the blade is formed with a lengthwise extending internal tube, or has a tube welded or cemented therein, and the rod (10) is screwed, friction fitted, cemented or welded within the tube.
