[Also in Division C2] Oligomers, containing one or more methyl carboxylate groupings, are used as functional fluids such as hydraulic fluids or synthetic lubricants, or as components of such fluids, and are prepared by heating butadiene and/or isoprene with methyl methacrylate in the presence of a ruthenium catalyst and, as solvent, an aliphatic alcohol containing from one to six carbon atoms.
