Abstract

1,165,239. Air cushion vehicles. BELL AEROSPACE CORP. 29 Aug., 1967 [17 March, 1967], No. 39436/67. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle is composed of at least three separate, interconnected units all of basically similar construction, comprising a rigid top platform 22, rigid side panels 26 extended by a flexible skirt 28 and a rigid base surface 24 apertured at 29 for the passage of cushion-forming air, all units being formed with side apertures 36 connected by flexible ducts for the free flow of air between units. The at least three units consist of a unit or units 14 constructed solely as load-carrying platforms, one or more units 16 in which the platform 22 is formed with an air intake for a fan driven by a power plant within the unit for supplying cushion air and one or more units 12 formed with a pilot's control cabin, a propulsion unit 45, 46 and directional control surfaces 48. The units are connected together by chain links 40 and may be formed with flexible edge strips 52 which assist in preventing loss of cushion air between the articulated units. Each unit may be provided internally with corner blocks of buoyant material. An embodiment is described in which units are grouped in a single line and in another embodiment the skirts may be arranged round those units forming the periphery of the assembled units. Flexible inflatable covers may be attached to the top platform to enclose and protect cargo carried thereby.
