Abstract

1,164,973. Lampholders. UNITED-CARR Inc. 29 Jan., 1968 [21 Feb., 1967] No. 4437/68. Heading H2E. A lampholder 10 comprises an insulating element 14 disposed in a copper shell 12 and carrying blade terminals 16 and a polarizing pin 18. The insulating element 14 is of organic polymeric material and has plane walls 20, 22, arcuate walls 24 and upper and lower surfaces 28, 26 through which extend apertures A and B, containing slots 30A, 30B respectively. Arcuate flanges 32, 38 extend, adjacent surface 26 from the side walls 20, 22 respectively, the flange 38 abutting an arcuate guide portion 34 which has a bore 36. The copper shell 12 comprises a tubular body 68 with one end connected by a flange 72 to a tubular extension 70 and the other end having two opposed radially extending segments (74, 76, Fig. 11, not shown). Each terminal 16 comprises a rectangular blade portion 50 having a tang 62 and a dimple 60 on one edge, similar members extending in opposite directions on the other edge (in another embodiment, both dimples extend in one direction and both tangs in the opposite direction), and an integral narrower U-shaped spring portion 52 having a dimple 66 and a resilient end 64 which engage an eyelet 84 located against a shoulder 48 in each aperture A, B, a spring 86 around the eyelet 84 being depressed on inserting a lamp (not shown). The tangs 62 locate shoulders 44 in the grooves 30A, 30B which are orientated so that the terminals 16 are mutually perpendicular. The pin 18, e.g. of brass, has a wider portion having a U-shaped extension (not shown) which engages the flange 38 of the element 14, and preferably a longitudinal slot which is closed when the pin is inserted into the bore 36, a narrower portion of the pin extending from the element 14. The element 14 is inserted, terminals first, into the shell 12, the guide portion 34 passing through a groove in the radial segment (76) of the shell 12, so that the flanges 32 and 38 abut the radial segments (74 and 76 respectively). Portions of the shell 12 are swaged to abut the flange 38 and the U-shaped extension of the pin 18.
