Abstract
1,164,953. Hydraulic brakes. AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT, and REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT. 12 March, 1968 [3 May, 1967], No. 12072/68. Heading F2F. In an hydraulic vehicle brake installation in which a pressure limiter is provided in the feed circuit for the rear wheel brakes, a by-pass is arranged in parallel with the limiter and includes an inertia member such that the by-pass is automatically opened for rearward travel and closes for forward travel as soon as the deceleration exceeds a minimum value. As described, the pressure limiter L, Figs. 1, 2 (former not shown), which may be controlled by the vehicle load, and by-pass D are arranged between conduits a<SP>2</SP>, a<SP>3</SP> connecting conduit (a) from the master cylinder (M) to the rear wheel brakes F<SP>2</SP>. The front wheel brakes (F<SP>1</SP>) are connected directly to the master cylinder via conduits (a<SP>1</SP>), (a). The by-pass comprises an inertia valve including a cylindrical body 3 connected via conduits 1, 2 to conduits a<SP>2</SP>, a<SP>3</SP> respectively and provided with a valve seat 6 closable by ball 8. The body is inclined rearwardly at an angle of about 5 degrees to the horizontal so that for all rearward motion the ball remains at the lower end of the body so that the limiter L is bypassed. For forward motion as soon as the deceleration exceeds a preset minimum, e.g. 4 m/s/s, the ball rolls up the surface of the body 3 to close the valve so that the braking pressure is controlled by the limiter. The limiter comprises two chambers 10, 11, connected respectively to conduits a<SP>2</SP>, a<SP>3</SP>, and in communication via aperture 12 closable by valve element 13. The element 13 is connected to a piston 14 which bears against a pivoted lever 15 connected via a spring 17 to the pivotal lever b of the rear wheel assembly. The valve element 13 will close the aperture 12, to isolate the rear wheel brakes from the rest of the braking system, when the pressure in conduit a<SP>2</SP> exceeds the thrust of the spring 17 which depends on the vehicle loading.
